1853 Studios proudly presents Peripheries, a group exhibition featuring Rabia Begum, Thomas Bradley, Rio Darwin, Kamil Duda, Daisy Fulton, Gemma Lees, Mahrokh Mofid Nakhaei, and Iqra Tariq
This exhibition showcases works that interpret, expand upon, and celebrate the peripheries of our world and everyday lives. For some, a periphery is a physical space - an edge or a boundary, a place left behind or at risk of being forgotten. For others, peripheries exist as communities: groups of people who may feel displaced, yet find hope and joy in the connections they’ve built. By questioning and shedding light on these margins, we honour those who are often overlooked, those in need of support, and those who boldly see the world through a different lens.
The theme of this exhibition is deeply rooted in the gallery’s own identity. Housed in an old textile mill rich with long-forgotten industrial history, 1853 Studios sits on the periphery of central Manchester. While Oldham has been culturally overlooked in recent years, this studio and gallery space is part of a changing landscape - offering the breathing room necessary for exciting new work to emerge.
This exhibition marks the final instalment in our recent series of projects, generously supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
